#8216;Superman#8217; and #8216;Clark Kent#8217; Employment Tips
8216Superman8217 and 8216Clark Kent8217 Employment Tips 8216Superman8217 and 8216Clark Kent8217 Employment Tips But what about Superman as an employee icon? After all, the caped crusader is also Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter employee with the Daily Planet, valued colleague of Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson, and full-time headache for his boss, Perry White- what with his tendency to suddenly vanish from the job during public emergencies and miss live coverage of the latest Superman heroics.Superman SymbolismThere are various other interpretations of the symbolism of Superman. Some recent and fascinating speculation about Superman suggests that his manga book character welches explicitly created in 1933 by Jewish Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster as a Biblical golem (an indestructible super-human avenger and protector of the tribes of Israel), or that he is Jesus (in disguise), or serves as an inspiration to illegal immigrants everywhere, because he is one,or is a libertarian champion of the resistance against the New World Order. However, Supermans significance as an employee icon, paradigm and role model seems to have flown under the radar of pop and work culture, seemingly overlooked, ignored, undetected or disregarded by kids, HR managers and critics alike. To redress this imbalance, lets take a close look at the employment resume and work style, habits and values of Superman (a.k.a. Clark Kent), with a view to teasing out useful real-world job and career tips as inspiration for job seekers, job holders, recruiters, managers and employers1. Absenteeism will be forgiven if there is a spectacular offset Despite his exasperating tendency to disappear just as some huge disaster or dramatic rescue is unfolding, Clark Kents occasional scoop bewerbungsgesprchs and reliable pipeline to Superman mitigate the vanishing act- indeed, make the sudden disappearances pale in comparison. This principle is not some pure Hollywood and comic book fiction and fantasy in fact, its a ta cit guiding principle of many U.S. elected officials and administrators, e.g., of frequently vacationing presidents and session-skipping members of congress who occasionally endear themselves by supporting something thats very popular and maybe even right.2. If youre doing a job that no one else can or wants to do, it wont matter that you are an illegal immigrant Although the Daily Planet did not advertise for Superman, it unwittingly hired him when it hired undocumented Clark Kent. This situation corresponds to U.S. employers unwittingly (or otherwise) hiring undocumented workers or workers with forged employment authorization. As long as they get the job done and nobody else wants or can do it, their visa status will be regarded by some employers as irrelevant.Although not hired to do the job of saving the world from approaching asteroids and fighting for truth, justice and the American (increasingly global) way by battling super-villains with super-powers, these are indeed part of Clark Kents secret job description- jobs that no one else is both willing and able to take on. Besides, given that no one else has the privileged access to Superman that Kent has, he does that part of his job in a way no one else can.4. If you are moonlighting with a second job, keep it to yourself and out of the office fruchtwein of the time, when Clark Kent has to switch jobs and attire to respond to an emergency, he heads to a phone booth (which, given their looming elimination by cell phones, is going to require mora time to find). This is an example of excellent compartmentalizing and concealment of second jobs. So, if, for any reason, you need to hold down a second job, it may be wise to be as discreet about it as Superman and to take great pains to ensure you are not caught doing the second job while on duty at the first.4. Be prepared to perform emotional labor Having to display moods, attitudes and feelings in service to a company, clients or customers constitutes what is c alled emotional labor- basically pretending to feel things you dont by displaying fake behavior, such as forced customer service smiles and patience.Clark Kent cleverly utilizes emotional labor as a tactic for concealing his Superman identity No less polite than Superman, Kent is, however, super-meek, even timid and self-effacing. A fast-food franchise counter job would have provided comparable concealment behind non-stop Have a nice day recitations and flash-frozen smiles. However, such emotional labor is not as a requirement limited to basic service industries. Ask any hedge-fund manager with top-tier clients, any doctor with decent bedside manner or a used-car salesman- they know.5. Tailor your resume to the job and omit anything you dont want to discuss in the job interview Do you imagine that Clark Kent would have listed caped super-hero or kryptonite researcher among his credentials noted in his resume?Of course not- not even under interests, hobbies or volunteer work. Likewise , if you have had jobs you cant afford to list in your resume, dont. Just hide them. If thats a choice that is ethical enough for Superman, it should be ethical enough for you.6. Always have a change of clothes with you in the office Like Clark Kent, you may have to unexpectedly change into something else in an emergency or after a coffee spill, or have something on hand to change into for a vigorous physical workout, e.g., at the company gym or in, Kents case, holding up the Golden Gate bridge after a collapse of sections of it.In fact, many of us will have as many reasons as, if not more than, Clark Kent for doing so, since being as clumsy as he pretends to be or having clothing that, unlike his second suit, can be stained or torn will be true for virtually all of us mere mortals. As a corollary to this advice, if there is anything you never change that you are wearing under your business suit every day, make it your little secret.

20 Clues That You Might be a Micromanager
20 Clues That You Might be a Micromanager20 Clues That You Might be a MicromanagerManagers are rarely if ever heard describing themselves as micromanagers. Yet, working for a micromanaging boss isone of the most frequently cited reasons employees hate their jobsortheir bosses. Clearly, theres a disconnect here. Are you acting like a micromanager without even knowing it? The 20 questions below will help you judge for yourself. Each describes a common trait of a micromanager. Add one point for each yes answer and check your score at the end. 20 Questions Do you have a long list of pending approvals and decisions that await action? Micromanaged employees have learned the hard way that they need your approval for every little decision. Behind your back, you may be referred to as the bottleneck. You are always running out of red pens. As far as youre concerned, there isalwaysroom for improvement in any document, even if your margin notes are subjective or nit-picking.You insist on tagg ing along with your employees to any meetings that they have with your boss, company executives, key clients or vendors, or anyone else worthy of your attention. You insist that your employees copy or blind copy you on all emails you deem important. Your email inbox regularly exceeds its storage limit. You regularly work long days and weekends and rarely take a vacation because you think no one can do your job as well as you.You often re-do work that you have delegated to an employee. You really do have a sign on your desk that says The Buck Stops Here. You often call meetings before meetings to make sure your employees are prepared for meetings. You insist on having all work processes documented. You think you are smarter than any of your employees and get frustrated with them because they just dont get it. You resent having to babysit them but you have no choice. You rarely have time for developing strategy, because youre working so hard on day-to-day details. Your boss pointed out you r lack of strategic thinking in your last performance review. When you delegate, you spend more time describing how to do the task than on whatneeds to be accomplished. You have each of your employees cell phone numbers and text them often outside work hours. You require weekly and monthly activity reports from your employees. You hold frequent post-mortems meetings to second-guess every decision and action taken.Your employees never take any initiative or come up with new ideas. You need to do their thinking for them. You measure and monitor everything. Your motto could be if you cant measure it, you cant manage it.You never allow your employees to attend meetings for you.You need to know what your employees are doing at all times. You have access to their calendars so that you can keep track of them. You have high turnover and low employee engagement scores. When you do find a rare high performer, they quickly find another opportunity. Scoring 10 or more You are a stone-cold micro manager. You refuse to let go and trust your employees. You need to change your ways, or youll be doomed to a career full of frustration, burnout, and missed promotional opportunities. Talk it over with your boss, someone in human resources, a trusted peer, or an executive coach. There is hope for you, but you have to face the issue and want to change. 5 to 9 You are a borderline micromanager. Hopefully, your micromanaging ways are situational and temporary. For example, maybe you have a lot of new employees on the team. Go back and examine the questions you answered yes to and ask yourself if this behavior is really necessary. Set a goal to eliminate one item at a time until you are at 5 or under. 4or less Youre probably not a micromanager. Still, its worth going back and examining the questions you answered yes to. Ask your employees for honest feedback. Talk to a few managers that you really admire to get their perspective. You may be surprised by the positive impact of eliminatin g even one or two of these micromanaging habits. None. Congratulations You are an empowering leader who knows how to hire and develop great people and then turn them loose. Your employees must love you, your boss must be impressed, and you have no problem maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Please make yourself available to any of those micromanagers that come to you for advice. When Youre a Micromanager Most micromanagers arent aware that theyre doing it. They may take pride in running a tight ship or proclaim that the buck stops here. They may feel theyre giving their employees direction and support. They may not reallytrust their employeesand hope to protect them from screwing up. In any case, micromanagement leads to miserable employees and lower productivity. It stunts the growth of every employee and manager, and it leads to poor long-term performance and the loss of good talent. Dont give up hope, though, if you see yourself in any of the micromanaging behaviors desc ribed above. Awareness of the problem is the first step towards improvement.

How Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your Attention
How Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your AttentionHow Ads Bend the Truth to Get Your AttentionLying, its one of the things were taught never to do (unless were saving someones feelings). After a few weeks in an ad agency, people are being rewarded for it. OK, its not lying in the traditional sense of the word. But there are many different ways to lie, and professional advertisers know them all too well. Type of Lies Omission This is perhaps the most common type of lie in advertising. Simply put, its taking relevant information off the table so that only the best features of the product or tafelgeschirr are highlighted. So for example, if you have a diet pill that will help you lose 50lbs in 10 weeks, but it must be combined with furious exercise and a low-calorie diet to work, the lie of omission would be leaving the diet and exercise facts on the cutting room floor.Commission An out and out lie, such as buy this CD, and you will make $1 million in under a year is very rare in advertis ing. They are easy to spot, and also hard to defend. Error A case in point here is the infamous Sketchers Shape Ups campaigns that launched the shoe. The ad agency welches led to believe that this show could help you lose weight and stay in shape, and so they ran with it. That was an error. There was no malice meant, but it was still a deception.Exaggeration Also very common in advertising, although exaggeration is used so blatantly that very few people believe what the advertiser is saying. Obviously, spraying on some deodorant is not going to have women running after you from miles around. Its taking things to the extreme to make a point. Thus, harmless fun. Denial This is dangerous. Refusing to believe anything negative about the product or service being advertised, and leaving it out of every communication. For the longest time, the tobacco industry refused to admit that its products were harmful. Even doctors were hawking them.MinimizationIn other words, the opposite of exagger ating the benefit you play down the negative aspects. So, this product may cause slight discomfort when the product is known to cause major pain and suffering, thats a lie of minimization. Reinvention If the story doesnt fit, change the story. This can be done in many ways, from the use of sarcasm and tone to rearranging facts and quotes to benefit the product or service being told. Examples of Common Lies Used in Advertising You will see bad ads from worse agencies, and they will outright lie or aim to mislead in the most tricky ways possible. Some places walk a fine line between legal and illegal, using every loophole in the law to avoid prosecution. These are the ads that feature copywriting atrocities like Compare at $100 - That does not mean the product is worth $100 it means that you should compare the product youre about to buy with one that costs $100. Thats often like comparing a Cubic Zirconia ring with a diamond ring. Yes, theyre almost the same, but come on. Similarl y, that $59 generic tablet I not one that can be honestly compared to an iPad, but these lies often existCall in the next 10 minutes - And what happens? You get free shipping? You get your order doubles at no extra charge? You get a free pony? It doesnt matter, the time is irrelevant. You get those deals no matter what. It is simply a way to get people racing to the phone. But they dont say if you dont call in the next ten minutes you wont get it. Its blatant deception to make you think your quick response gets you something other lazier people wont get. Pay NOTHING For Covered Services. Oooh, more tricky language. That phrase means nothing. Nothing at all. But it sounds like it means everything. Its like saying pay nothing to breathe the air in your backyard. Well, duh. If a service is covered, its paid for. See. So, those are the kinds of lies that advertisers will tell. They are not breaking any laws they are just messing with language. But out and out lies, they are disproven qu ickly and will result in some very bad karma for the brand. Imagine if brands said things like Guaranteed to make you 25 IQ points higher. Our bacon cheeseburgers are 100% fat and calorie free.Well be there in 29 seconds or less, every time. That just leaves advertisers wide open for lawsuits and dismayed customers. Anything that blatantly false will be discovered, and through word of mouth the brand will be ripped apart. Advertising does bend the truth, but usually, its so exaggerated that no one ever believes it to be anything other than entertainment to raise attention. From talking crocodiles to cars driving on the ceiling, its simply ?razzle-dazzle to get you to customers to pay attention.

5 Questions for Ryan Kahn on How to Land Your Dream Job or Internship - FlexJobs
5 Questions for Ryan Kahn on How to Land Your Dream Job or Internship - FlexJobs 5 Questions for Ryan Kahn on How to Land Your Dream Job or Internship - 32Ryan Kahn has always had a knack for helping people land their dream job or internship, starting with himself. As a college student, Kahn really wanted to work in the music industry but wasnât sure how to break in so he started doing internships to meet people and make connections. Through his internships, he landed his post-graduation dream job at Warner Music Group, and immediately started paying his success forward by helping students still in college to break into the industry as well. Fast forward seven years, and Kahn is a nationally-recognized career coach who has placed thousands of students and recent grads in their dream jobs through Dream Careers, Inc., heâs the author of the book, HIRED! The Guide for the Recent Grad, and he hosted a 20-episode reality television show on MTV called HIRED! which helped college students and recent graduates find amazing jobs while educating viewers on the best job search tactics.. Because heâs been so successful at helping other people find their dream jobs, we wanted to talk with Kahn about how he does this, and how you can land your dream job or internship. How to land your dream job or internship: 1) How did you get started in this line of work? Whatâs your job as a career coach like? After I graduated and starting working at Warner Music Group full-time, I kept going back to UCLA and giving back. Every semester, I was a guest speaker on how to get your break in the entertainment business. Every time I gave that speech and met students, Iâd meet a lot of great students and would pick out the best to hand hold through getting an internship or job. I noticed that I was having so much fun working with students to help them break into their dream jobs, and then I was approached by Dream Careers, Inc. They offered to pay me for what I was already doing for free, and thatâs how I became a career coach. Iâve been with Dream Careers for about seven years and I work with college students to help them find summer internships and jobs in the entertainment industry. Each year, I work one on one with about 300 students. 2) How did you get started working with MTV for their reality series, HIRED (which followed young professionals through their entire job search process from application to interview to acceptance or rejection)? The short story is that it was the right time. The idea for the show came right when the recession was hitting and a lot of people could use a show like this as a great way for education and entertainment. The longer story is that a producer in New York had an idea for a show called My First Real Job. It was a great idea and he found out about Dream Careers and what I was doing and he thought it fit his vision of the show. When I met him, I loved the idea for the show, I thought it was great. We filmed an eight minute reel. It was very simple and not a very big production, but he had a great idea and vision of what he wanted it to look like. He also knew he wanted to go after MTV as the right place for it. The first time he pitched it, it got upstreamed all the way to the president, and he immediately wanted it for 20 episodes. It was documentary style so everything about it was absolutely real. It was real people going after really spectacular jobs. 3) Would you recommend internships to college students in particular, or do you think professionals of all ages could benefit from them? Iâm a huge advocate of everyone doing internships no matter your age. I canât tell you how many times Iâve thought, âgeez Iâd love to take the summer off and go intern at Warner Bros or Tory Burch.â I work with people who have been in a career and are looking for a change. And a lot of the time thatâs what Iâd suggest. Youâve got to just do it. A year from now youâre going to wish you had done it today. Great risk has great reward. By taking that sacrifice of several steps back potentially, youâll be so much happier knowing that youâre doing something youâre passionate about. 4) Is it really realistic for people to pursue their dream careers in this economy? Youre going after a job thatâs a one in a million, during a time when that million has turned into a hundred million. But Iâve had the same success rate. Itâs a matter of using certain tactics to get your foot in the door, meeting people you need to meet, making the right impression, and making it happen. You donât get to jump into your dream career starting today. You get there by putting yourself in the right direction today. Getting your dream career is a windy road but you have to start now. 5) Fall semester is well underway and the Class of 2013 is considering their lives post-graduation. What advice do you have for them? Grab an internship NOW. Fall and spring internships are a great way to get your foot in the door early on. You donât have to commit that much to it. You can literally do a one or two day a week internship. Cram it into your schedule because thatâs going to get your foot in the door, meeting the people you need to meet before everyone else does in May. Think about how many other students are graduating in your year in your major. If youâre a public relations major, youâre also competing against all the PR majors graduating from UCLA, NYU, Harvard, Stanford, Florida State, everywhere. Youâve got to do something that sets you apart. People like hiring people that theyâre friends with. If youâre making a good impression in your internship, just like I did at Warner Music Group, theyâre going to want to help you out and make sure youâre the first person that gets hired after graduation. Our big thanks to Ryan Kahn for speaking with and sharing his story and expertise! To get in touch with Ryan, you can find him on Twitter: @HIRED.

5 Things Recruiters Wish You Knew About LinkedIn
5 Things Recruiters Wish You Knew About LinkedIn 5 Things Recruiters Wish You Knew About LinkedIn Even though LinkedIn is the number one online tool for professional recruiters, it often lets them down. Many recruiters fail to find the candidates they need â" not because of problems with the site itself, but because simple profile mistakes render the candidates invisible. If this is happening to you, youre missing out on great opportunities. So here are the top 5 things recruiters wish you knew about LinkedIn. 1. A complete profile makes the difference between being found and being invisible. If youâre one of those people who has chosen to complete only parts of your profile, it is unlikely that you will be found by a recruiter. Thatâs because LinkedInâs search engine gives preference to fully completed profiles. If youâre going to join the site, make sure youâre not wasting your time complete every section of your profile as thoroughly as you can. 2. Using key words is vital Recruiters can only find you if your profile contains the words they commonly search for. When a recruiter is asked to find a social media manager for example, he or she may search for terms like âsocial mediaâ but also for specific sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn or for terms such as âcontent marketerâ or âblogging.â So when you write your profile, think about the words commonly used in your field and be sure to include them throughout. 3. Itâs best to sound like a human Because the resume tends to be a somewhat formal document, many people feel they have to write a formal LinkedIn profile â" many even write about themselves in the third person. But actually, itâs much more effective to write in your own voice and to write in the first person (using âIâ rather than âheâ). Be professional of course, but be human too. Show a little of your personality and more recruiters will contact you. 4. Your photo is important I still see profiles without photos and this is a huge no-no. Research has shown that profiles without photos are viewed far less often than those that include a photo. Whatâs more, the type of photo matters. Make sure that you look approachable and friendly. Smile. And, like the tone of your profile, keep it informal but professional. Being concise is a good thing LinkedIn restricts the content you can include. For example, you only get 2,000 characters for the summary. But they also allow 2,000 characters for every job youâve held. Some people are tempted to use all this space, and simply cut and paste their resume content into the profile. I donât recommend this. The level of detail on your resume is just too much for busy recruitrs to read online. Plus, it just makes you look lazy. Instead, develop concise summaries about each position and keep them focused on your impact and results. Follow these 5 steps and you response rate will increase Recruiters are busy people and have to work quickly. If your profile doesnât meet one of these 5 criteria, itâs likely that they either wonât find it, or wonât bother reading it. So take the time to make sure its the very best it can be. And if youd like my help, check out my ebook The Blue Sky Guide to LinkedIn. You can start reading for free. photo credit: Avard Woolaver via photopin cc

Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job.
Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job. Basically, I Can Take Practically Any Job. âSince Iâm in sales, I can do pretty much any sales job in any industry.â Really? Letâs slow down and think about that one, because when youâre in the midst of job search, itâs important to focus in order to find what you love. Where do you really excel? As an individual contributor who can come into a territory, find the customers, engage them, and expand their accounts month after month and year after year? Perhaps your history shows youâre great when it comes to building the sales team, training them, motivating them, and providing leadership that captures awards and top rankings over and over. Maybe you have the personality type that truly enjoys consulting with the customer over the long term, taking a deep dive into their business, offering a customized solution, then serving as a partner with them to ensure their success. Those roles are different. And, I promise you, you only LOVE one of them. Thereâs a difference between landing any job and getting into that role you really want, where they value you, and where you know youâll thrive. So letâs talk about how to get there. Write your resume exactly 1 time. Too often what happens is candidates have multiple versions of their resume, or multiple iterations because it seems like you needed to adjust your story a few times. But the story doesnât need to be adjusted if it centers on 3 things: who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. The problem lies in not believing your story is strong enough. It is, though, when itâs authentic to YOU. Donât aggravate yourself or burn yourself out in your job search, by re-writing your resume every 2 weeks. Itâs not the resume that needs to be re-written. Rather, itâs what youâre doing to conduct your job search that likely needs to be re-shaped. Change your relationship with the job boards. Iâm going to bottom-line this one for you: if your job search consists nearly 100% of applying to jobs online, then weâll see you in that new job in about 2 ½ years. What you need to understand is that job boards are, literally, where 98% of your competition is. Particularly if youâre an experienced candidate or of a mature age, the job boards amount to nothing more than black holes. Youâre getting sucked into the vortex of being repeatedly ignored and / or rejected because the ATS is kicking your resume out. Or if a human being is seeing your resume, theyâre doing the quick math about your age, and moving on to the younger, hotter model. The more strategic approach is to leverage the job boards to find out who is hiring, then make your approach directly. Oh yeah, so, make your approach directly. Perhaps youâve heard of this fancy new place called LinkedIn. There you will find the human resource specialists, recruiters, and decision makers for virtually every company youâd ever want to work for. Identify the specific job opportunity, identify the relevant person, and send an inbox or InMail. This entire method only works when you focus in on what you want. âAny jobâ really wonât do. Specifics matter. Thereâs nothing specific about throwing spaghetti onto the wall and just seeing what sticks. While focusing may seem counterintuitive because youâre not going for every opportunity under the sun, focusing allows you to zero in on the opportunity, zero in on your value, and go directly for the win. Iâm presenting a full online master class on how to win the job you really want â" in half the time. â5 Secrets Smart Jobseekers Age 50+ Know That Make The Job Search EASY!â shows you EXACTLY what to do to get your resume past the ATS, and how to find and talk to virtually any decision maker you need â" immediately! Heres everything to know about financial abuse
Here's everything to know about financial abuse Here's everything to know about financial abuse Youâve heard of physical abuse. Youâve heard of emotional abuse. Youâve heard of sexual abuse. But have you heard of financial abuse? Probably not. Itâs just one more way that abusers wield their power to disenfranchise and harm their victims. Financial abuse is when money is used as a weapon. That can mean withholding money, stealing money, restricting the use of money, accruing debt in a partnerâs name without their knowledge, or sabotaging a partnerâs career. These behaviors make a victim dependent upon their abuser and make it difficult for them to leave the relationship. Victims are often forced to choose between staying in an abusive relationship and poverty or even homelessness. Because of this, financial abuse is more common and more insidious than you might think.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Many women have experienced domestic abuseAccording to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of all women in the United States have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner, a quarter of women have experienced physical violence, and almost 10 percent have been raped by an intimate partner. To make matters worse, one-third of women who are murdered in the United States are killed by a current or former male partner. These are sobering numbers. They show that a huge swath of our population has experienced domestic violence of some kind, and domestic violence often escalates to murder. It touches more of us than we might realize. Most abuse victims have experienced financial abuseSo now we know that up to 50 percent of all women in the United States experience domestic abuse of some kind. But what does that have to do with financial abuse? Well, the two are directly and deeply linked. Financial abuse actually occurs in up to 99 percent of all abusive relationships. That means that in almost all abusive relationships, money is being used as a weapon to make a victim financially reliant on their partner, or financially unable to leave the relationship.Itâs not about the moneyJust like sexual abuse isnât about sex, financial abuse isnât actually about money. Itâs about control. Money is essential to getting through our everyday lives. If someone else is controlling that resource, then we would have to be completely dependent on them. If you were an abuse victim, but your abuser controlled all of your finances, you probably wouldnât be able to afford to leave them. This sort of abuse maintains control over the victim, especially if there are children involved. It can ruin careersOne of the ways that abusers maintain control over their victims is by sabotaging their jobs and careers. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), between 21 and 60 percent of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming from the abuse. Abusers do this by pre venting their victim from going to work, interfering with their work by making frequent phone calls or showing up at their office, or demanding that they quit. According to the CDC, victims of intimate partner violence âlose a total of 8 million days of paid work each year, the equivalent of 32,000 jobs.âThis abuse tactic prevents a victim from being able to earn their own money and have their own sense of independence. It isolates the victim and makes them even more dependent upon their abuser. It can ruin futuresOne of the common tactics of financial abuse is known as coerced debt. This can range from opening accounts in the victimâs name to forcing the victim to sign financial documents. This behavior can trap a victim in crushing debt and destroy their credit history. If youâve read about why your credit score and credit report matter, you know that they arenât just numbers. They determine your ability to get a loan for things like buying a home, buying a car, going back to school, etc. They also can determine whether or not you are approved for an apartment or hired for a job. All of these things not only can impact whether someone can successfully leave an abusive partner, but they can make or break a victimâs future. To hear more personal stories about this sort of destruction, check out this Buzzfeed feature. It took years for this one woman to clean up her credit report after her husband opened credit cards in her name and didnât pay them off.It can be hard to spotAs with a lot of abuse, financial abuse is not necessarily overt from the beginning. It can seem like your partner is just looking out for you. For example, when my husband and I first moved in together, I would ask him how much money he spent on things because I wanted to make sure we were sticking to our household budget. This was a way for me to make sure we were on the same page financially. However, if I started interrogating him about every single purchase he made or limited his access to his or our combined resources, I would be committing financial abuse. Another example could be your partner checking up on you during the day to see how youâre doing. An abusive behavior would be if they contact you so much that they make it difficult or impossible to do your job, putting your job at risk. Itâs important to recognize the signs if this behavior begins to escalate and turn into abuse. To learn more about financial abuse, visit Guttmacher Institute and NCADV. Tips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions
Tips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions Tips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions 4Perhaps youâre a pro at answering all the typical interview questions. You can list your strengths and weaknesses with ease, and you know to never talk down about a previous boss. But youâre in an interview thatâs wrapping up and youâre suddenly asked, âSo, if you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have?â If your internal thought is something like, âUm, what?!â youâre probably not alone. Curveball interview questions are often used by hiring managers to assess how candidates respond when caught off guard and to see a different side of their personality. While thereâs no right or wrong answer to curveball interview questions, there are ways you can prepare yourself to answer in the best way possible. Tips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions Stay calm, and reveal your thought process. One of the reasons hiring managers ask strange interview questions is to throw you off your game a bitâ¦to see how you perform under pressure, and get a better sense of your thought process. So, no matter how nervous the question makes you, or how surprised you are to hear it, try your best to keep your cool. Youâll also want to think out loud. This will show the hiring manager your process- and also prove that thereâs some real thought behind your response. For instance, if they ask, âIf you were a tree, what type of tree would you be?â donât just say, âA palm tree!â Instead, explain how you got to that answer. âWell, I consider myself to be fairly tough and flexible- and Iâm always growing, especially in my career. So, Iâd say Iâm most like a palm tree.â Donât take them at surface level. Realize that thereâs always a reason behind asking a curveball interview question on the part of the interviewer. For example, if youâre asked, âWhat kind of superhero would you be?â they donât actually want to know that information just for fun. Theyâre likely trying to assess how well youâd fit on the team, and if youâre more of a leader or a follower. Assess what information the interviewer is trying to glean from asking you these types of questions and youâll keep yourself in the running. Take time to answer. Itâs OK to take a moment and think about your answer. Hiring managers know that theyâre throwing you a curveball question, and they wonât expect you to have the perfect answer off the bat. As mentioned in the previous tip, determine what the interviewer is really trying to get at, and take a few seconds to think over your answer. Saying something like, âThatâs a fun question! Let me think about it for a minute,â will buy you some time. Show your personality. âWhat type of kitchen utensil would you be and why?â âWhatâs the last thing you watched on TV?â âWhat advice would you give your boss?â If youâre thrown a curveball interview question, itâs OK to let your personality shine! Smile and even make a joke if itâs appropriate. While interviewers want to see how you answer the question, they also want to see your personality and how you handle an odd question off the cuff. If youâre totally thrown off by a question, itâll probably show through, and they might infer that you canât go with the flow or deal with unexpected issues in the workplace. Relax and answer in a way that will show you are an ideal candidate. Ask to answer later. While this probably isnt the most ideal option, if youre truly drawing a blank, ask to come back to the question later. You could say something like I want to think a little more about this onecan we circle back to it later? This can buy you some time to be mentally preparing an answer. To keep you from getting stuck, remember to not think too hard about it. Come up with a positive answer that shines a light on part of your personality or your work ethic. Practice. The best way to answer curveball interview questions with ease is to practice. A quick Internet search will find you plenty of sample questions. Try answering a few to get you into the right headspace. You can even find sample answers if youâre stuck on the best way to answer. Practice on your own, or even with a friend to get some feedback. While thereâs no way to know if youâll even be asked any crazy questions at all, practicing will properly prepare you to answer any questions that come your way! Check out more job interviewing tips.

How to Answer Brain Teaser Job Interview Questions
How to Answer Brain Teaser Job Interview Questions How to Answer Brain Teaser Job Interview Questions Sometimes employers ask interview questions that are a challenge to answer. Many companies, especially those involved in IT and management consulting, include these type of brain teaser questions in their job interviews. But dont worry too much about them. It is impossible for candidates to prepare answers for all the possible questions that might be asked during a job interview, especially some of the less common and unusual questions. For example, what happens if the interviewer raises a hypothetical question like, How much toilet paper will it take to span the state of New Jersey? or unusual queries like, What animal best represents who you are? or, If you could be any animal on a carousel what would you pick and why?â You dont need to try to come up with prepared answers. You wont know what youll be asked, and these types of questions dont have a right or wrong answer. Rather, the employer is trying to get at how you respond to questions under stress and how your logical thinking processes work. Why Interviewers Ask Brain Teaser Questions On the surface, these questions are completely unrelated to the job for which you are applying. However, companies use these questions to assess your analytical and problem-solving abilities. The questions are designed to determine how well you can think through a query and calculate or determine a response or solve a problem without getting confused or flustered. How you react during the process is as important as calculating an answer. So, when the interviewer asks you a brain teaser, take a moment to get your bearings, gather your thoughts, and then work through your answer. Tips for Answering Brain Teaser Interview Questions Bring Paper and a Pencil - Many interviewers will allow you to use a paper and pencil when solving a brain teaser, so keep some handy during the interview. Be sure to bring graph paper in case you want to create a graph or chart. Do ask if its acceptable before you start figuring out an answer on paper.Relax and Take a Deep Breath - Some people become flustered by these types of interview questions because they seem irrelevant or impossible to solve. The interviewer is most curious, however, about how you can handle the stress of these questions. Therefore, take a deep breath and calm yourself down before beginning to answer. Dont panic if you cant figure it out. Not all questions are easy, and not all have a right or wrong answer. Buy Some Time - You can buy some time before responding so you can formulate a thoughtful answer by saying something like, Thats an intriguing question; Ive never gotten that one before.Ask for Clarification - Its fine to ask for clarification if its hard to figure out just what the employer is looking for in a response. For example, with the question about how much toilet paper it would take to span New Jersey, you might say, Interesting question â" were you thinking north/south or east/west, at the widest/longest points, or an average? Calculate Your Answer Out Loud - Because your answer is far less important than the steps you take to arrive at it, be sure to tell the interviewer each step in your problem-solving process. It is fine if you decide to change tactics halfway through solving the problem; after all, most of these companies are looking for people who can brainstorm multiple creative solutions to real-world business problems.Explain Your Answer - Its important to recognize that many unusual questions are asked to see how your thought process works and not because the employer expects you to furnish any particular right answer. Be sure to articulate your reasoning when you respond to these types of questions. For example, if you said a cat was the animal that best represents you, you might mention that you are curious or quick. Of course, referencing qualities that are in line with job requirements is always a good way to respond. Dont Be Afraid to Ask Questions - You should feel comfortable asking the interviewer questions about the brain teaser. An interview is a conversation between two people, not an exam, so you should not feel completely alone when answering these questions. However, do be prepared for the interviewer to say that he or she cannot give you a particular piece of information or assist you. What to Do When You Dont Have an Answer - If you are stumped by a strange question, be prepared to mention that you cant think of a viable answer to that question just now. Its acceptable to ask if you might return to it later. Otherwise, let it go. You dont want a tough question to stress you so much that you lose your focus. Dont let your inability to respond disrupt your composure during the rest of the interview. You dont need to be perfect to succeed in an interview. If possible, share a response later in the interview or your follow-up communications. Brain Teaser Question Examples Here are a few common brain teasers you might be asked during a job interview. You can practice working through these questions aloud to prepare for an interview. How many gallons of white house paint are sold in the United States each year? Why are manhole covers round? How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?How many times heavier than a mouse is an elephant? If the time is 3:15, what is the angle between the hour hand and the minute hand on a clock? (HINT: The answer is not zero!).How many square feet of pizza are eaten in the United States each month? What are the decimal equivalents of 5/16 and 7/16?How many quarters (placed one on top of the other) would it take to reach the top of the Empire State Building? How would you determine the weight of a commercial airplane without a scale? How many trees are there in New York Citys Central Park? Additional Interview Tips Your interviewer will also ask you some questions about your experience and education. Prepare yourself by reviewing the most common interview questions and some example answers. Also, make sure you wear proper interview attire. Itâs important to choose the right clothing for your interview because you want to make a great first impression. Finally, after your interview is finished, be sure to send a thank-you note to your interviewer. Itâs good etiquette, and it helps to keep you in the interviewerâs mind when he or she is deciding who makes it to the next round of interviews.

People like autonomy at work, but most have few opportunities for creativity
People like autonomy at work, but most have few opportunities for creativity People like autonomy at work, but most have few opportunities for creativity How do you feel when you donât have power over what you produce on your team? When was the last time one of your ideas got the green light?Itâs clear that people like a certain amount of autonomy at work- without it, we lose our motivation, our ability to succeed, and our health. Now thereâs more proof that the majority of workers are stumbling by without that autonomy, just taking orders. Robert Half and Happiness Works released a study on workplace happiness showing that a staggering 55% of people surveyed said they have âlittle or no control over their work,â and that 58% said âthey have few opportunitiesâ for creativity, among many other findings.Plus, getting older doesnât necessarily mean youâll like your job more- the report found that as you get older, âhappiness and interest at workâ go down, and your stress level goes up. That process starts at age 35, the report found. From the ages of 35-54, people arenât as happy or into their work as when they h it about 55, when âsome of this loss is reversed.â Employees older than 55 feel better about their jobs in those younger than them. The study didnât explain why, although itâs more likely that after 55, people face reduced financial and family pressures from raising kids, or enjoy greater seniority and thus autonomy. No wonder Americans donât fear robots taking their jobs, since everything feels cold and depersonalized to the majority of workers during a long workday. Thatâs a lot of people in America who are working on auto-pilot.The role of empowerment at workOverall, the researchers gauged the âhappiness levelsâ of more than 24,000 professional employees in 8 countries- that 2,000 of those people were from the UK and provided information about how they feel at work, which was displayed in various charts. More than half of those surveyed live and work in North America. The researchers explored six elements that have an impact on workersâ happiness. âEmpowerme ntâ was one of them, which featured the findings about control and chances to be creative. Not surprisingly, certain positions offered the least ability for people to spread their wings- the survey found that only 35% of those in administrative roles and 34% in accounting said they could often be creative at work. The researchers suggested boosting empowerment by favoring manager assistance over âmicromanagement.âPhil Sheridan, senior managing director at Robert Half, commented on empowerment in a statement.âCreate a culture where team members are encouraged to stretch their problem-solving skills by taking smart, strategic risks and provide them with the opportunity to contribute new creative ideasâ¦But also make it known that you are available to offer support and guidance so that they donât find themselves floundering alone,â he said. What the happiest workers shareThereâs a roadmap for creating happy teams and workers, but few companies follow it. For instance, co ntrol over oneâs work also ties into the âhallmarks of happiness,â or the things that the happiest employees all possess, which author Daniel Pink explained later in the report.Although he prefaced his descriptions by saying everyone is different, two hallmarks of happiness that Pink mentioned were: âhaving some control over the work you do, when you do it, how you do it and who you do it withâ and âhaving great colleagues who you both like and trust.âOne of Pinkâs suggestions on how managers can boost their reportsâ happiness is to meet with each person separately once a week for quick discussions (âmaybe five-minuteâ ones) about whether they are getting ahead in what theyâre working on, and offering assistance if theyâre not. Youâll have to spend a lot of time with them, after all, so itâs worth the investment. Why who you work with mattersAnother finding that stood out is that our happiness at work depends heavily on whether we like who we work with. The research found that, compared to people that didnât work well with their coworkers, those who reported having âgood relationships with others on their teamâ were 2.7 times more likely to experience happiness at work.Eighty-one percent said they âget along withâ members of the direct team theyâre part of, while 62% reported having âgood friendsâ in the office and 68% saying they think groups at their employer âgenerally work well together.âIt not all fun and games for top leadersIn another portion of the report, it became clear that the leaders at the top of the corporate ladder, âsenior executives,â were the winning the most when it came to happiness.Based on responses from 2,000 part- and full-time adult workers in the UK, this group was the happiest when compared to âstaff-level professionals,â âmanagers,â âsales and customer service workersâ and âadministrative and secretarial clerks.âBut itâs not all rosy at the top. These leaders had higher than average amounts of stress. What you can do to feel happier at work todayEven if you canât hire all the people you love working with, there are things you can do to boost your happiness and sense of autonomy at work. Take a walk. Embrace positivity. Instead of harping on what you canât control at work, think about what you can. We may not feel like like we have free reign at work all the time, but there are measures both managers and employees can take to work against these feelings. And if that all seems difficult, try embracing the robots - like this little girl.
